Following disappointing box-office results for The Crimes Of Grindelwald, WB is taking the time to get the third Fantastic Beasts movie right.

Following the disappointing critical reception to The Crimes Of Grindelwald, Warner Bros. boss Kevin Tsujihara has revealed that the studio is working with J.K. Rowling to make the third Fantastic Beasts movie even better.

Talking to the LA Times, Tsujihara discussed the disappointing box-office results for The Crimes Of Grindelwald, which was likely due to the negative critical reaction, and explained what steps the studio is taking to get Fantastic Beasts 3 back on track. Tsujihara also talked about the loyal Harry Potter fanbase, saying that the new movies should give fans what they want while still providing new viewers something to enjoy.

See what he said below:

“The second film didn’t perform as well as the first, but I think we know what we need to do to get the third film hopefully even better than the first one. And JK Rowling is really working hard now on that third script, and we’re going to get it right. She has an incredible vision of where she wants to go with this that is incredibly exciting. The hardest part of the franchise is you have such a big core fan base. That fan base really knows the lore and they want to go deep into these characters. But what you don’t want to do is intimidate people. You want to be able to create a stand-alone movie that’s enjoyable for someone who isn’t steeped in the lore.”

As someone who loves the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts movies enough to start a fan blog, I’ve got to say that this seems like a really smart move by the studio. Even though I enjoyed The Crimes Of Grindelwald as a darker and more serious sequel, I don’t see any harm in taking more time to work on the script and refine the narrative. This way, the filmmaker and actors will all be more prepared to make another epic instalment of this wonderful franchise.

The third Fantastic Beasts film is expected to begin filming in Autumn. The film, which will once again be directed by David Yates, is scheduled for release in 2020. Are you still excited to Fantastic Beasts 3? Let me know in the comments section below!

  1. I have mixed feelings about this. I’m relieved they’re listening to the fans and aware that there’s room for improvement. The Harry Potter films set my expectations high for further films in the Wizarding World so I confess to being critical of “Fantastic Beasts” and “Crimes of Grindelwald”…because I think Rowling and Yates can do better. And because I am so fascinated by the expansion of this saga that I want it to be as good as it can be; great if possible.

“FB” had fun parts but felt so bleak and despairing at times to me. “Grindelwald” had amazing world-building inside of a confusing story. This is Rowling’s world and she has a vision but the audience can only see on the other side of the camera–so I think it would help if she got some advice from writers/directors how to create a cohesive story within the film that makes sense to viewers.
