Harry Potter: 10 Characters That The Movies Should Have Spent More Time With

With epic heroes and terrifying villains, the Harry Potter film franchise is full of wacky, complex and undeniably brilliant characters, but it’s fair to say that there are some we wish we’d spent more time with! While the Harry Potter film series does an outstanding job of adapting Harry’s adventures and focusing on the main group of characters, some of the best supporting players are often left in the background.

Here at The Blog That Must Not Be Named we love pretty much everything about the Harry Potter movie franchise, but we’d be lying if we said we weren’t a bit disappointed that the films never took the time to develop and explore a handful of supporting characters.

Outside of the main cast of characters, such as Harry, Ron, Hermione and Voldemort, the Harry Potter series is flooded with colourful and charismatic characters, that we wish we could have spent just a little bit more time with as the franchise grew.

From quirky Hogwarts students to some of Harry’s coolest professors, these are the Harry Potter characters that we wanted to spend more time with in the Harry Potter movies:

8. Tonks

As many book readers already know, Tonks is one of the series’ quirkiest, coolest and funnest supporting characters, which is why it was so disappointing to see that the character barely made it into the movies. Over the course of the series, Tonks had such an interesting and heartbreaking arc that would have been incredible to watch develop on the big screen!

7. Ginny Weasley

You might be surprised to hear this, but Ginny is genuinely one of the Harry Potter series’ funniest, smartest and most badass characters. Unfortunately, the films never paid much attention to the character or bothered to give her a personality, which only made it more jarring when she became Harry’s love interest in the later books/movies.

6. Hagrid

The early Harry Potter films did a great job setting-up Hagrid and developing his relationship with Harry, but this unfortunately took a back seat later in the franchise. Hagrid is a father figure to Harry and is the person who introduced him to the Wizarding World, so it’s a shame that the films never truly took the time to give Hagrid a satisfying arc.

5. Remus Lupin

Remus Lupin wasn’t just Harry’s coolest Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, he was a genuinely caring and tortured individual, which is difficult to find in the Wizarding World, and the movies definitely would have benefited by exploring him further throughout the series.

Also, how can you not love a guy that just walks around giving people chocolate?!?

4. Neville Longbottom

While the book series took a great deal of time to give Neville a truly great arc, the films always treated the character as a bit of a joke. Of course, Neville finally gets his moment to shine in The Deathly Hallows – Part 2. but we can’t help but feel that the films didn’t do a good enough job when it came to Neville Longbottom.

3. The Weasley Twins

There’s no denying that Fred and George were great in the movies, but they were AMAZING in the books! While J.K. Rowling treated the twins like important characters with interesting storylines, the films used them as nothing more than comedic relief. To this day, it’s disappointing to think of how much more impactful the series could have been, if only the movies had spent a bit more time with Fred and George.

2. Luna Lovegood

As one of the most beloved characters in the entire series, we really wish Luna was given more time in the spotlight when it came to the films. Luna is perhaps the quirkiest and weirdest character the books have to offer, but the films never really took the time to properly develop the character or show why fans fell in love with her in the first place.

1. Dobby

Dobby was easily one of the best characters in both the books and the movies, but it’s fair to say that the films didn’t do everything they should have done with the character. After his first appearance in The Chamber Of Secrets, Dobby pops-up throughout the series, and if the films had spent more time with Dobby between The Chamber Of Secrets and The Deathly Hallows – Part 1, his sacrifice would have been all the more emotional!
