From the first chapter to the last, the Harry Potter series is full of magic and adventure, but don’t let that fool you Muggles, the Wizarding World can be a truly terrifying and dangerous place! While the Harry Potter books are some of the most joyous and uplifting you’ll find, the series has more than its fair share of terrifying, haunting and undeniably spooky moments!
From horrifying beasts and creepy voices to one of the scariest villains in pop-culture history, the Harry Potter series never fails to deliver some bone-chilling moments and genuine scares. To celebrate spooky season, which just so happens to be my favourite time of the year, I thought it would be fun to examine some of the Harry Potter series’ scariest sequences and rank the ten spookiest moments from worst to best!
Check out my list below:
10. The Time Harry And Malfoy Ran Into Voldemort In the Forest

“Harry had taken one step towards it when a slithering sound made him freeze where he stood. A bush on the edge of the clearing quivered…Then, out of the shadows, a hooded figure came crawling across the ground like some stalking beast. Harry, Malfoy and Fang stood transfixed. The cloaked figure reached the unicorn, it lowered it head over the wound in the animal’s side, and began to drink its blood.”

9. The Time Dementors Boarded The Hogwarts Express

“Standing in the doorway, illuminated by the shivering flames in Lupin’s hand, was a cloaked figure that towered to the ceiling. Its face was completely hidden beneath its hood. Harry’s eyes darted downwards, and what he saw made his stomach contract. There was a hand protruding from the cloak and it was glistening, greyish, slimy-looking and scabbed, like something dead that had decayed in water.”
Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban
8. The Time Harry And Ron Met Aragog

“And from the middle of the misty doomed web, a spider the size of a small elephant emerged, very slowly. There was grey in the black of his body and legs, and each of the eyes on his ugly, pincered head was milky white. He was blind.”
Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets
7. The Time Lupin Transformed

“There was a terrible snarling noise. Lupin’s head was lengthening. So was his body. His shoulders were hunching. Hair was sprouting visibly on his face and hands, which were curling into clawed paws.”
Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban
6. The Time Harry Spotted A Dog In The Shadows

“A light appeared at the end of his wand, almost dazzling him. He held it high over his head, and the pebble-dashed walls of number two suddenly sparkled; the garage door gleamed, and between them, Harry saw, quite distinctly, the hulking outline of something very big, with wide, gleaming eyes.”
Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban
5. The Time Nagini Devoured Charity Burbage

“The flash of green light illuminated every corner of the room. Charity fell, with a resounding crash, on to the table below, which trembled and creaked. Several of the Death Eaters lept back in their chairs. Draco fell out of his on to the floor. ‘Dinner, Nagini,’ said Voldemort softly, and the great snake swayed and slithered from his shoulders on to the polished wood.”
Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows
4. The Time Death Eaters Attacked The Quidditch World Cup

“A crowd of wizards, tightly packed and moving together with wands pointing straight upwards, was marching slowly across the field. Harry squinted at them … they didn’t seem to have faces … then he realised that their heads were hooded and their faces masked. Hight above them, floating in mid-air, four struggling figures were being contorted into grotesque shapes.”
Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire
3. The Time The Inferi Rose From The Water

“A slimy white hand had gripped his wrist, and the creature to whom it belonged was pulling him, slowly, backwards across the rock. The surface of the lake was no longer mirror-smooth; it was churning, and everywhere Harry looked, white heads and hands were emerging from the dark water, men and women and children with sunken, sightless eyes were moving towards the rock: an army of the dead rising from the black water.”
Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince
2. The Time Dementors Attacked Little Whinging

“The balmy evening was suddenly piercingly, bitingly cold. They were surrounded by total, impenetrable, silent darkness, as though some giant hand had dropped a thick, icy mantle over the entire alleyway, blinding them.”
Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix
1. The Time Bathilda Bagshot Wasn’t Quite Herself

“And in the instant that he looked away, his eyes raking the tangled mess for a sword hilt, a ruby, she moved weirdly: he saw it out of the corner of his eye; panic made him turn and horror paralysed him as he saw the old body collapsing and the great snake pouring from the place where her neck had been.”
