It looks like Warner Bros. will need to find a new actor to portray the villainous Gellert Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts series!
Johnny Depp has announced that he will no longer portray the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts film franchise. Taking to his official Instagram account, the actor revealed that he agreed to resign from the Harry Potter spin-off series following a request from the studio.
Warner Bros. has confirmed Depp’s departure from the film and revealed that they are currently looking to re-cast the part for the third instalment of the franchise.
Here’s what the studio had to say:
“Johnny Depp will depart the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ franchise. We thank Johnny for his work on the films to date,” the studio said. “‘Fantastic Beasts 3’ is currently in production, and the role of Gellert Grindelwald will be recast. The film will debut in theaters worldwide in the summer of 2022.”
Depp first appeared as Gellert Grindelwald at the end of the first instalment of the franchise, Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them. The actor reprised the role for the sequel, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald!
