Reports recently emerged stating that Mads Mikkelsen was in talks with Warner Bros. to replace Johnny Depp as dark wizard Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts franchise. Talking to IGN about his new movie Chaos Walking, however, Mikkelsen denied the reports and claimed they were simply rumours.
Here’s what the actor had to say:
“Oh, that is on the rumour basis as we speak. So I know as much as you do from the newspapers. So I’m waiting for that phone call.”
While we always take casting rumours with a grain of salt, especially in the very complicated situation with Johnny Depp, it’s entirely possible that Mikkelsen is contractually required to keep his casting quiet, at least until an official announcement has been made by the studio. Still, it’s shocking to hear that Warner Bros. hasn’t been in touch with the actor, since multiple reports from reputable sources state that he is director David Yates’ top choice.
While Mikkelsen’s casting is unconfirmed, at least for now, we’re still extremely excited to see who the studio eventually picks to play Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts 3 and beyond. Since the film is still filming right now, we’ve got to figure that the casting will be announced sooner rather than later.

Bloody bollocks if ya ask me. Warner Bros. are damn fools to fire Johnny Depp, he was great as Grindewald. Figures they would though, they care more about covering their own ass than Johnny.
