Founded in the tenth century by four of the greatest witches and wizards of all-time, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is one of the most powerful and mysterious locations in the Wizarding World. Even those who have discovered many of the schools hidden passageways and secret rooms have only scratched the surface, and it’s entirely possible that no single witch or wizard has unlocked all of the castles secrets.
For our latest post on The Blog That Must Not Be Named, we thought it would be fun to discuss Hogwarts’ most exciting secrets and share many of the facts that some of the biggest Harry Potter fans might not know.
Here are ten things you might not know about Hogwarts:
10. Security at Hogwarts has had to be increased numerous times over the years, most notably during Gellert Grindelwald and Lord Voldermort’s rise to power.
9. Albus Dumbledore planted the Whomping Willow to hide a secret passageway that leads to the Shrieking Shack. This was to give Remus Lupin a safe place to transform.
8. It is not possible to apparate or disapparate into, or out of, Hogwarts – unless you’re albus dumbledore
7. If Muggles stumbled across Hogwarts, it would look like a dilapidated building with a“Keep Out: Dangerous” sign on it
6. The school motto is Draco dormiens nunquam titillandus, which translates to Never tickle a sleeping dragon.
5. While it seems like the school has a mind of its own, the castle is actually maintained by HOUSE ELVES (WORKING SLAVES)
4. It has an extremely bizarre grading system – O For Outstanding, E For Exceeds Expectations, A for Acceptable, P for Poor, D for Dreadful, and T for Troll
3. The magic surrounding the castle interferes with Muggle technology
2. Boys cannot enter the girls’ dormitories. If a boy attempts to enter the girls dormitory, the staircase will turn into a slide
1. The castle grounds is home to a number of magical creatures, including a Giant Squid that resides in the Black Lake
