J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series is full of colourful, complex and wonderfully terrifying characters, but when it comes to the best of the best – Lord Voldemort is easily one of the series’ most intriguing and complex characters that the series has to offer. There’s no denying that Lord Voldemort is a major character in the Harry Potter movies, and Ralph Fiennes does an incredible job portraying the character – but there’s so much about Voldemort that you’ll only discover if you read the books.
While the Harry Potter movies did an incredible job of bringing Voldemort to life, there’s a great deal of information that the movies never revealed about the most powerful dark wizard of all-time. For our latest post on The Blog That Must Not Be Named, we’re ranking five details that only book readers will know about the villainous Lord Voldemort.
Check out our list below:
5 – He Wanted To Teach Defence Against The Dark Arts
It is revealed in the book series that Tom Riddle aka. Lord Voldemort returned to Hogwarts to interview for the Defence Against the Dark Arts position, but was turned away by Albus Dumbledore. It is also revealed that after being turned away, Voldemort cursed the position – which explains why no Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher lasted more than one year.
4 – His Mother Seduced His Father With A Love Potion
Using Dumbledore’s pensieve in Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince, Harry learns that Voldemort’s mother, Merope Gaunt, seduced his father with a love potion and fell pregnant while the magic was still in place. It is believed that Lord Voldemort is completely incapable of feeling love or affection, because he was conceived through the use of a love potion.
3 – He Worked At Borgin and Burkes
Lord Voldemort doesn’t exactly seem like the kind of person you’d excpect to work in a shop, but that’s exactly what he did after leaving Hogwarts. We learn in the Harry Potter books that a young Voldemort took a job at Borgin and Burkes in Knockturn Alley – although it is revealed that he only took the job so that he could find more famous items to turn into Horcruxes.
2 – He Was Always Strange, Even As A Baby
It is revealed in Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince that Lord Voldemort has always been a strange and unusually cold character, even when he was a baby. Mrs Cole, who raised Tom Riddle at the orphanage following Merope Gaunt’s death, reveals to Dumbledore that even as a baby – Tom never shed a single tear. Could this be because he was conceived using a love potion, perhaps?
1 – He Picked Harry To Be The Chosen One
In Harry potter And The Order Of The Phoenix, Dumbledore finally reveals why Voldemort wanted to kill Harry as a baby. Dumbledore reveals that Voldemort killed Harry’s parents and attacked him as a child because of a prophecy that spoke of a boy who has the power to defeat the Dark Lord. Book readers know more of the story, however, as Dumbledore reveals that the prophecy could also also have referred to Neville Longbottom – but Lord Voldemort saw Harry as a greater threat.
