Severus Snape is quite easily one of the Harry Potter series’ most complex, intriguing and entertaining characters, with creator/author J.K. Rowling giving the character one of the most shocking and compelling arcs in the entire series. Throughout the seven Harry Potter books and eight movies, fans were led to believe that Snape was one of the bad guys. In Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, however, J.K. Rowling shocked the world by revealing that Severus Snape was actually one of the good guys.
Following our last post, which examined all of the moments that made us think Snape was a villain, we thought it would be fun to look at all of Snape’s most heroic moments! For our latest post on The Blog That Must Not Be Named, we’re discussing seven moments that made us think Severus Snape was a hero.
Check out the list below:
7 – When He Helped Protect The Philosopher’s Stone
In Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone, Harry, Ron and Hermione believe that Professor Snape is attempting to steal the Philosopher’s Stone from Hogwarts. It is later revealed, however, that Snape is one of the witches/wizards protecting the stone. In an attempt to stop anyone from reaching the Philosopher’s Stone, Snape sets-up a potentially deadly puzzle. To move forward and find the Philosopher’s Stone, an individual must drink the correct potion from a selection of seven.
6 – When He Tried To Save Harry During His First Quidditch Match
During Harry’s first Quidditch match in Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone, it becomes clear that someone in the crowd is attempting to kill the young wizard by magically throwing him from his broom. While he initially believes that Snape is responsible, Harry later learns that Quirrell was the one attempting to kill him. Even more surprising, it is revealed that Snape was actually trying to save Harry during the match.
5 – When He Tried To Teach Harry Occlumency
When it becomes clear that a connection exists between Harry and Voldemort’s minds, giving Voldemort access to Harry’s thoughts and memories, Snape gives Harry private Occlumency lessons in an attempt to block the Dark Lord from accessing his mind. While it’s fair to say that these lessons didn’t turn out to be a success, Snape deserves some recognition for attempting to help Harry protect himself from Lord Voldemort.
4 – When He Brewed Lupin’s Wolfsbane Potion
Despite the fact that Remus Lupin was one of the students that made his life at Hogwarts a living hell, Snape agreed to brew the incredibly difficult Wolfsbane potion every month. This helped Lupin immensely, as the Wolfsbane potion eases the symptoms of Lycanthropy and allows the drinker to keep their mental faculties after they transform. This not only helped Lupin manage his condition, but kept all of Hogwarts’ students and staff safe.
3 – When He Protected Harry Fropm Umbridge
During her time at Hogwarts in Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix, Delores Umbridge attempted to question Harry while he was under the influence of Veritaserum (truth potion). Seeing that this would put Harry, Sirius Black and the entire Order of the Phoenix at risk, Snape gave Umbridge fake Veritaserum whenever she wanted to question Harry. When asked to make a fresh batch of Veritaserum, Snape lied and said it would take a month to make more.
2 – When He Led Harry To The Sword Of Gryffindor
It’s hard to imagine what would have happened if Harry, Hermione and Ron never got their hands on the Sword of Gryffindor in Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows. Even though it put his life in an incredible amount of danger, as he was one of Voldemnort’s most trusted followers, Snape sent his Patronus to lead Harry to the Sword of Gryffindor. This gave Harry, Ron and Hermione the weapon they desperately needed to destroy Voldemort’s remaining Horcruxes.
1 – When He Shared His Memories With Harry
During his final moments in The Deathly Hallows, Snape asks Harry to take some of his tears, knowing that they contain information that Harry desperately needs. Using the Pensieve in Dumbledore’s office, Harry learns that Snape had been secretly protecting him throughout his years at Hogwarts. More importantly, Snape’s memories reveal that a piece of Voldemort’s soul lives within Harry, meaning that Harry must sacrifice himself in order to make Voldemort mortal.
Without this key piece of information from Snape, Harry would have never been able to defeat Voldemort and save the Wizarding World. Snape gave his life to protect Harry and defeat Lord Voldemort!
