Since the news broke that Casino Royal and Hannibal actor Mads Mikkelsen had been selected to replace Johnny Depp in Fantastic Beasts 3, fans of the Harry Potter spin-off series have been desperate to find out what Mikkelsen will be bringing to the Wizarding World!
In a new interview with TotalFilm, Mikkelsen opened-up about joining the Fantastic Beasts series, although he couldn’t reveal too much, and teased what fans can expect from the third instalment of the franchise.
See what Mikkelsen said about the third Fantastic Beasts film below:
“We’ve wrapped it up. Obviously I have only been part of it for half the time that the rest of the gang has. It was a lovely experience. I think they had a really great script; a great, solid story. So if that is anything to measure on, I think the film will be… you know, as magical as it has to be, with all the wonderful creatures, but also quite beautiful. There are some really interesting, heartbreaking stories in there. And hopefully that will come across.”
As for what fans should expect from Mikkelson’s version of Gellert Grindelwald, the villain of the series, the actor makes it clear that his version of the character won’t be exactly the same as Depp’s. Talking to TotalFilm, Mikkelsen briefly discussed how he and director David Yates approached the character, revealing that he worked hard to make the role his own.
“We have done a few bridges that will allow us to recognize it, but we’ve also said we have to make it our own. I have been a fan of Johnny Depp since I saw him as a young man, and to try to bring his intensity and his way of doing it into my work is a no-go. I have to find my own, because his is unique, and I just have to let that be, and find a different path.”
The third film in the Fantastic Beasts franchise is currently scheduled for release next summer. As well as Mads Mikkelsen as Gellert Grindelwald, the film stars Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, Jude Law as Albus Dumbledore, Ezra Miller as Credence/Aurelius Dumbledore, Katherine Waterston as Tina Goldstein, Alison Sudol as Queenie Goldstein, Dan Fogler as Jacob Kowalski and Callum Turner as Theseus Scamander.
