As reported first by Variety, The Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim, an original animated film set before the events of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings trilogies, has been scheduled for a theatrical release on April 21, 2024 by Warner Bros. Pictures.
The Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim is set around two-centuries before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings. The new animated film, which is reportedly taking artistic inspiration from Peter Jackson’s Middle-Earth movies, will explore the untold story of Helm Hammerhand, the King of Rohan, as well as the creation of Helm’s Deep – the fortress featured in The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers.
Kenji Kamiyama (the TV series Blade Runner: Black Lotus and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) is directing with Blade Runner: Black Lotus producer Joseph Chou. They have been working on the movie since it was first announced by Warner Bros. Pictures in June 2021.
Concept art for The Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim was revealed alongside the official release date. The artwork, which you can see for yourself below, shows what will surely be an epic-scale battle.
“The Lord of the Rings films took Tolkien’s masterwork to new cinematic heights and inspired a generation,” said Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich. “It’s a gift to be able to revisit Middle-earth with many of the same creative visionaries and the talented Kenji Kamiyama at the helm. This will be an epic portrayal unlike anything audiences have ever seen.”
“All of us at New Line feel a deep affinity for the extraordinary world J.R.R. Tolkien created, so the opportunity to dive back into Middle-earth with the team at Warner Bros. Animation is a dream come true,” New Line bosses Carolyn Blackwood and Richard Brener said. “Fans know Helm’s Deep as the stage for one of the greatest battles ever put to film and, with many of the same creative visionaries involved and the brilliant Kenji Kamiyama at the helm, we couldn’t be more excited to deliver a fresh vision of its history that will invite global audiences to experience the rich, complex saga of Middle-earth in a thrilling new way.”
It is also worth noting that The Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim is totally separate from Amazon’s highly-anticipated The Rings Of Power series, which is set thousands of years before the events of The War Of The Rohirrim and the Peter Jackson movies.
Variety reports that a voice-cast for The Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim will be announced soon.
