It’s a good time to be a Zack Snyder fan! Zack Snyder, director of Man Of Steel, Zack Snyder’s Justice League and Netflix’s Army Of The Dead, has announced that his most recent movie, Rebel Moon, has started filming. Snyder originally pitched the story of Rebel Moon, which has been described as an epic sci-fi fantasy, to Lucasfilm a decade ago. When the idea was rejected as a Star Wars spinoff, Snyder removed all Star Wars references, changed the name and pitched the possible franchise to Netflix. The film has now began shooting, with Snyder sharing a handful of behind-the-scenes pictures – including a first look at actor Djimon Hounsou.

“This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan,” Zack Snyder told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out.”

In addition to directing Rebel Moon, Snyder has co-written the screenplay with Shay Hatten (Army of the Dead) and Kurt Johnstad (300). You can read the first plot synopsis below:

“A peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius. Desperate people dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them make a stand.”

Netflix wants to build an epic sci-fi franchise with Rebel Moon, and Zack Snyder has assembled a cast capable of making that happen. The film stars Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Sofia Boutella, Rupert Friend, Stuart Martin, Jena Malone, Staz Nair, E. Duffy, Charlotte Maggi, Sky Yang, Michiel Huisman, Cary Elwes, Corey Stoll, and Alfonso Herrera.

Rebel Moon will land on Netflix in 2023.
