Marvel’s ‘Fantastic Four’ Reboot Loses Director Jon Watts

Director Jon Watts, who has spent the better part of as decade making Tom Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy for Marvel, has dropped out of the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot.

While it would be easy to assume that a disagreement must have taken place between Watts and Marvel, it seems the director is just looking to take a much needed break from the superhero realm. Watts recently completed his Spider-Man trilogy with Tom Holland, which he’s worked on for the better part of a decade. The Fantastic Four reboot was intended to be the Watts’ next project, but the filmmaker has stepped away to explore other projects.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito, co-president of Marvel Studios said: “Collaborating with Jon on the Spider-Man films has been a true pleasure. We were looking forward to continuing our work with him to bring the Fantastic Four into the MCU but understand and are supportive of his reasons for stepping away. We are optimistic that we will have the opportunity to work together again at some point down the road.”

Discussing his decision to walk away, Watts said that “Making three Spider-Man films was an incredible and life-changing experience for me. I’m eternally grateful to have been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for seven years. I’m hopeful we’ll work together again and I can’t wait to see the amazing vision for Fantastic Four brought to life.”

According to Variety, Sony and its Spider-Man producers have made it clear they expect to reunite Watts with Holland and Zendaya to continue the Spider-Man series.

Marvel Studios began to develop a Fantastic Four movie following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2017. The film will introduce the iconic superhero family to the Marvel Cinematic Universe – something that fans of the comic-books have wanted to see ever since Marvel launched it’s interconnected franchise. The Fantastic Four reboot was expected to be the first former Fox property to make its way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it’s not yet clear how Watts’ departure will impact the release schedule.
