During the first day of its Geek Week event, Netflix revealed that The Sandman will debut on August 5, 2022. The release date was announced alongside a brand-new trailer for the series, which promises to be one of the streamers most ambitious projects so far.
Based on Neil Gaiman’s beloved comic-book series, The Sandman follows Morpheus aka Dream aka The Sandman aka the Master of Dreams, who is one of the seven endless beings. Other endless beings include Destiny, Death, Desire, Despair, Delirium, and Destruction. After being held prisoner for one-hundred years, Dream escapes to find that his absence has set-off a series of events that threaten to change the waking and dreaming worlds forever.
The Sandman has an impressive cast, which includes Tom Sturridge as Dream, Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer, and Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne. The series also features Boyd Holbrook as The Corinthian, Charles Dance as Roderick Burgess, Jenna Coleman as Johanna Constantine, David Thewlis as John Dee, Stephen Fry as Gilbert, and Patton Oswalt as the voice of Matthew the Raven. It has also been revealed that Star Wars actor Mark Hamill will voice Merv Pumpkinhead.
Netflix has described the series as “rich, character-driven blend of myth and dark fantasy woven together over the course of ten epic chapters following Dream’s many adventures.” Netflix also shared a bunch of posters for the series, which you can check out below:
There is another world that waits for all of us when we close our eyes and sleep — a place called the Dreaming, where The Sandman, Master of Dreams (Tom Sturridge), gives shape to all of our deepest fears and fantasies. But when Dream is unexpectedly captured and held prisoner for a century, his absence sets off a series of events that will change both the dreaming and waking worlds forever. To restore order, Dream must journey across different worlds and timelines to mend the mistakes he’s made during his vast existence, revisiting old friends and foes, and meeting new entities — both cosmic and human — along the way.
