Director Todd Phillips has officially confirmed that a sequel to 2019’s Joker is on the way, with Joaquin Phoenix set to return as the iconic DC Comics villain.
Todd Phillips, who wrote and directed Joker, took to Instagram to announce the sequel, sharing a few interesting shots – including the cover of the screenplay and star Joaquin Phoenix reading the script. This seemingly confirms that Phoenix will be returning to reprise his role as the Clown Prince of Crime. The working title for the Joker sequel was also revealed by the images, with the film being titled Joker: Folie à Deux. Folie à Deux is defined as a psychological disorder where the same or similar mental disorder affects two or more people.
2019’s Joker was a massive hit for Warner Bros., taking over $1 billion worldwide. The film wasn’t like most comic-book movies, with Phillips delivering an artistic, shocking and moody character study. At the moment, it’s hard to know where Phillips will take Phoenix’s version of the iconic villain in a sequel, but I’m sure it will be a shocking direction.
