Following the success of his live-action Aladdin movie, Guy Ritchie has reportedly been hired to helm Disney’s live-action Hercules film.
According to Deadline, Disney has tapped The Gentleman and Aladdin filmmaker Guy Ritchie to direct its upcoming live-action Hercules movie. It’s still not clear what kind of remake Disney has planned for Hercules, but with Ritchie in charge I think it’s fair to say that the film will include the iconic music and songs from the animated original. With that said, it’s possible that Disney will take the Mulan approach and use the animated film as inspiration for a more serious, music-less remake.
The live-action Hercules film will be produced by AGBO, the production company run by Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo. The first draft of the film was written by Dave Callaham, although Deadline reports that Disney is in the process of hiring new writers.
Released in 1997, the animated Hercules movie was popular with audiences and critics – but the film didn’t do as well at the box-office as other animated Disney flicks. In the years since its release, however, Hercules has become and iconic and beloved Disney animation. Ritchie has been busy in recent years, directing films like The Gentleman, Wrath Of Man, and the upcoming crime film Operation Fortune: Ruse De Guerre. His live-action remake of Disney’s Aladdin earned the director his first and only (so far at least) billion dollar film at the worldwide box-office.
