Taron Egerton, most known for his portrayal of Elton John in Rocketman and his role in the Kingsman franchise, has confirmed that he’s met with Marvel Studios to discuss joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As for what role he’d take in the ever growing MCU, Egerton has teased that the meeting were about the franchise’s new interpretation of Wolverine.
In a recent interview with NY Times, Egerton confirms that he has met with Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige about joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor also teased that the meetings might have been about Wolverine, stating that he hopes to get a shot at the role:
“I don’t think it would be wrong to say that,” he said, laughing. “I’d be excited but I’d be apprehensive as well, because Hugh is so associated with the role that I’d wonder if it’d be very difficult for someone else to do it.”He paused, then flashed a grin. “But hopefully if it does come around, they’ll give me a shot.”
Marvel Studios gained the rights to Wolverine, along with the rest of the X-Men and Fantastic Four characters, when Disney acquired 20th Century Fox a few years ago. Since the acquisition, Marvel has been vocal about its desire to bring X-Men and Fantastic Four characters into the MCU – with Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness being the first film to include characters previously owned by Fox. Arguably the biggest challenge that the studio currently faces, at least as far as the X-Men are concerned, is the recasting of Wolverine. Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of the character is beloved by almost everyone in the comic-book community. This makes rebooting the character and finding a new actor infinitely more challenging, even for a studio as big as Marvel.
When it comes to actors who could replace Hugh Jackman, Taron Egerton is definitely one of the more exciting possibilities. The actor has shown a great amount of range in his relatively short career, so we have no doubt that he could make for a great Wolverine. The true challenge for Marvel isn’t re-casting Wolverine, but finding a way to make the character feel fresh and different for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
