While I may have a somewhat bias opinion, being someone with a blog focused solely on my love of the Harry Potter world, I couldn’t let a monumental game like Hogwarts Legacy come and go without posting some kind of review.
Released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC earlier this month, Hogwarts Legacy is an immersive, open-world adventure RPG set in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. In Hogwarts Legacy, players are able to control their own adventure in the Wizarding World, as they step into the role of a fifth year Hogwarts student and embark on a journey through new and familiar locations.
I feel it’s important to note that this is going to be a quick review discussing my overall reaction to Hogwarts Legacy. I’m not a massive gamer and wouldn’t attempt to review the game based on elements that I don’t truly understand. I’ve come to Hogwarts Legacy as a fan of Harry Potter, not as a gamer or game reviewer, and just wanted to share my quick review and reaction to the game as a whole.
As someone who grew up obsessed with the Harry Potter books and movies, an open-world game set in the Wizarding World is something I’ve always dreamed about, but never in my wildest dreams expected to play. While we’ve had some pretty good Harry Potter games over the years, we’ve never had a game that lived up to the potential of the Wizarding World. After taking the time to play Hogwarts Legacy and experience everything that it has to offer (if that’s even possible in a single week), I’m here to tell you that this is the Harry Potter game I’ve been dreaming of for over a decade.
Hogwarts Legacy delivers everything that fans of the Harry Potter books and movies could possibly want. It’s a massive and undeniably beautiful RPG, that stays true to J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World while giving fans of the series something new and unexpected. Giving players the chance to step into the Wizarding World with their very own character, Hogwarts Legacy is filled with adventure, danger and mystery – all of which we’ve come to expect from the iconic school of witchcraft and wizardry.
From thrilling combat, which is surprisingly challenging to fully master, to incredible puzzles, dark mysteries and a main narrative worthy of the Harry Potter name, Hogwarts Legacy is a joy to play. While I found the narrative incredibly fun, I’m not afraid to admit that I often found myself avoiding the main story quests to wander aimlessly around the castle looking for hidden passages, puzzles and easter eggs. Avalanche, the studio behind Hogwarts Legacy, have spent a great deal of time making Hogwarts as magical as it is in the books and movies. The detail poured into this game is utterly staggering, and I could (and likely will) spend months just walking the halls and exploring all of the castles mysteries.
